Arusha to Ngorongoro
0730hrs Pick up from your hotel in Arusha. After a pre-safari briefing by our representative, depart with your Safari Driver Guide and drive to Ngorongoro highlands through the Great Rift Valley climbing to the altitude of 8,000 feet. You continue to ascend to the exterior of the crater reaching its rim and here your first glimpse of what has often been referred to as the “Eighth wonder of the World.”
Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge
The Ngorongoro crater is so spectacular that it touches all the senses. A volcanic crater of over 259 square kilometres with surrounding walls rising 609 metres above it, the crater is a natural sanctuary for over 25,000 animals, including the black rhino. It is also a conservation area inhabited by the Masai tribe. The Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is built onto the rim of this amazing natural phenomenon, a stunning plant and local creeper covered stone lodge where guests co-exist in perfect harmony with the surrounding natural environment and wildlife. Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge, close to some of the earliest dwellings of man in Olduvai Gorge, has taken their cave paintings as Inspiration. It is built of stones and boulders and is literally hidden in the vegetation of the crater’s rim, disappearing completely from view from the crater’s floor.
Enjoy your lunch in the lodge.
1430hrs Visit the nearby Olduvai Gorge. The Gorge popularly referred to as the 'Crater of Mankind', is world famous for the Archaeological discoveries made there by Dr. Louis Leakey and Mary Leakey. The site is located about 10 to 15 minutes off the main road between Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Olduvai Gorge arose interest in the archaeological world as early as 1911, when German Professor Katurinkle whist looking for butterflies in the gorge, found some fossil bones. Dr. Leaky discovered there the skull Australopithecus-Zinjanthropus boisei - the nutcracker man who lived in the lower Pleistocene Age around 1,750,000 BC.
