Guided walks and bird-watching

The guided walk leads visitors up a spectacular ravine, which pierces the escarpment close to the lodge. Featuring a plunging river, cool forest, spectacular views and extraordinary bird life, the walk can be undertaken by anyone in reasonable health.

Lake Manyara's birdlife

An outstanding park for birding: 487 species have been recorded and depending on seasonal conditions, vast numbers of flamingos, pelicans and storks may be present. The lake's water level is highly changeable and can dramatically affect water bird populations. Mudflats are the place to find chestnut banded plovers. If conditions are right, thousands of pink backed pelicans and yellow-billed storks and less numbers of marabou storks and grey herons congregate to breed here. Flamingos also come and go in very large numbers. In the acacia woodlands look out for rollers, bee-eaters and shrikes while out on the plains red-billed oxpeckers can often be seen.

For the amateur and serious ornithologist alike, we offer a range of half or full day outings which can be custom-tailored to the interests of your ornithological party. The services of a professional ornithologist and up-to-date bird checklists are included, and picnics, bush lunches, camp suppers and sundowners can be scheduled to suit your needs.
