Slow in pace, wide-ranging in scenery and led by one of our trained safari guides, our Samburu nature walks are designed to offer gentle exercise and a fascinating insight into the world of African trees, flowers, insects, reptiles, birds and animals. A one-hour walk along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River is offered, alternatively, you can request a gentle nature trail around the lodge. Our walks take place at 10.30 am and 4 pm.
Samburu, an ornithologist's paradise
With over 1, 070 species of birds, Kenya has the second-highest country bird list in Africa, while the Samburu region boasts around 395 recorded species. So abundant is this area's birdlife that it is possible to notch up over 100 species in a day, the most noteworthy being the rare blue-shanked Somali ostrich. Secretary birds are plentiful, as are bands of bustling helmeted and vulturine guinea fowls, while along the river storks feed and sand grouse congregate at dusk. Both red-billed and Von der Decken's hornbills are common. The rugged nature of the reserve also provides an ideal raptor habitat; common sightings include; pygmy falcons, martial eagles and Verreaux's eagle owls. For the amateur and serious ornithologist alike, we offer a range of half- or full- day outings which can be custom-tailored to the interests of your ornithological party. The services of a professional ornithologist and up-to-date bird checklists are included, and picnics, bush lunches, camp suppers and sundowners can be scheduled to suit your needs.
