The guided evening walk
The ideal time to tour the winding streets of ancient Stone Town is in the early evening. At this time the heat of the day has lessened, the sun is beginning to set over the bay and the air is filled with the call to prayer from the many mosques that dot the town.Wandering through the narrow lanes where most of the houses are over 200 years old, you can catch a glimpse into a romantic world of fretwork screens, cool mosques, busy squares, gorgeously carved doors, fascinating bazaars and ancient curio shops.
Emerging from the streets on to the sea front, you can also see the House of Wonders and the Sultan's Palace by night, the illuminated Portuguese Fort and the Forodhani Gardens, which at night are transformed into a bustling food market where hundreds of merchants sell fresh-cooked kebabs, barbecued fish and chicken, rice, chips, spicy snacks and fresh fruit.
