Taking
the Eco Route
The Serena Group is committed to an escalating
eco-policy that embraces sensitivity to the
interests of the local population in relation
to such matters as: cultural preservation, sustainable
habitat and community development. The group
also abides by a code of responsible practice
in relation to: energy conservation, waste recycling,
sewage disposal, air emissions, pesticides,
noise reduction and visual pollution. Finally,
all Serena Group properties are built to harmonise
with the local landscape and to utilise eco-friendly
materials, local handicrafts and products. Wherever
possible we also aim to enhance the environment
via landscaping and indigenous plant material
reinforcement.
The Mara
Eco Programme
Experience has shown that committed sustainable
conservational policies work best when linked
to committed community support and to this end
the Serena Mara Safari Lodge works closely with
the local community to contribute to a broad
range of community benefits. These include;
road rehabilitation, maintenance of air strips
and building projects for local schools and
conservation centres. The Lodge also aims to
boost local employment by hiring and training
local personnel and offering educational scholarships
to local children. The Lodge has also provided
housing and electricity for the Kenya Wildlife
Service rangers and is following through on
an ambitious eco-programme that involves the
reclamation of eroded areas of bush and the
replanting of indigenous species.
We Need
Your Help
If you’d like to support Serena Hotels
in their efforts to plant more indigenous species
and trees and thereby contribute personally
to the greening of Africa, why not take part
in our Plant a Tree for Tomorrow Campaign? This
way, and for minimal expense, you can not only
invest in Africa’s future but also ‘own’
a small but significant part of the glory that
is the Masai Mara.
Where
to from here
If you have enjoyed the Serena Experience in
the Masai Mara, you might like to take in some
of our other properties. This way you can contrast
the beauty of the savannah lands with the vaulted
green of a tropical rainforest, the sapphire
and silver ribbon of the Swahili Coast or the
cosmopolitan bustle of downtown Nairobi. Here
are some suggestions that we believe will really
complement your Masai Mara safari experience.
