Other animals commonly seen in the park are the zebra, the antelopes and gazelles, the mongoose, the hyrax, the dik-diks and the lesser kudu. Birdlife is abundant as more than 600 species of bird have been recorded
Some of the interesting areas to be visited are the Mzima springs, Roaring rocks, Chaimu and Shetani Lava sites to mention a few.
Discover some of the highlights of the magnificent TsavoWest!
“Mzima”, meaning alive in Kiswahili is a peaceful oasis at the heart of red-dusty Tsavo and this magical place is not to be missed. The pure water of the three Mzima’ s pools filtered by the porous sponge-like soil of the Chyulu and the Shetani lava flow brings life to an unique ecosystem at only 40 km away from the Chyulu Hills. With a daily supply of more than 250 million litres of fresh water, the pool provides an oasis of green, an heaven for fishes, birds, monkeys, crocodiles and hippos. The main attractions are the two nature trails leading to an underwater viewing tank build to allow visitors to watch hippos!
Once climbed, the Roaring Rocks will give you magnificent panoramic views, usually only seen by the eagles and buzzards that fly around these cliffs, over the plain called Rhino valley and the Ngulia The Roaring rocks, located near the Rhino Sanctuary, has been for long an observation point for the protection of black rhinoceros and the fight against poaching. The eerie Roaring Rocks are named after the buzz of cicadas that inhabit them and the howl of wind that hits the bare rocks by producing a roaring sound.
The Shetani flow
A black lava flow of 8 km long, 1.6 km wide and 5 meters deep, is the remain of volcanic eruptions which were subject of tales among local communities who named the flow "shetani" meaning evil in Kiswahili after it spewed from the earth just 240 years old. Climbing the flow is not an easy task as the thick black soil is composed of uneven chunks of solid magma.
This morning, crown your morning game drive with a “Bush” Breakfast
Lion Rock Breakfast
Not many experiences are more memorable, or as typically Kenyan, as breakfast on the “Lion Rock”. One cannot resist the charming “Jambo” from the chefsas they welcome you to our wonderfully set breakfast buffet of cold cuts, fruits, cereals and hot dishes with eggs made to your specifications as you wait. The animals keep you company and only say “Kwaheri” (good bye) after you have had enough.

The lodge enjoys a uniquely privileged position at the heart of this world-famous national park.Secluded within a grove of acacia trees, the lodge looks out over the golden savannah plains, with uninterrupted views of the mountain itself. Close by are a series of emerald green swamps, which are fed by the melting snows of Kilimanjaro
At the centre of ‘Maasailand', the lodge's décor reflects the brilliant primary colors and iconic shapes representative of these legendary warriors. At the heart of the lodge, shaded by palm trees, is a free-form swimming pool; to either side of which stretch the rooms.
Afternoon at leisure to enjoy a swim or magnificent views from the lodge before embarking on an afternoon game drive at 16:00hrs. Elephants flourish as well in Amboseli; they’ve been tracked by researchers for decades and therefore largely escaped the ravages of 1980s poaching. You can spot some of the older “tuskers” lumbering along before the backdrop of Mt. Kilimanjaro – the ultimate African photo op! You’ll also be intrigued by the abundance of birdlife, from colourful little lilac-breasted rollers to comical guinea fowl to vicious hawks and eagles.
Bubbly Sundowner at Observation Hill
The ‘sun-downer’ is an essential part of safari life and dates back to the time of the great safaris of the 1920’s when elegant cocktails were always served while watching the spectacle of the African sunset. Timed to begin as the sun begins its descent, the Sun-downer begins with a gentle evening game drive, arriving at the sundowner site just as the evening sky turns gold-pink. As night falls, you will be driven back to the lodge in time for dinner. This is an experience not to be missed!

Maasai Village visit
The Maasai are undoubtedly one of the most famous traditional cultures on earth. The Manyattas are usually a circular encampment of long, low, rounded houses, created by daubing cattle dung over a framework of sticks.Visiting a Manyatta is a good way to learn more about Maasai culture and everyday life. Many ceremonies involve the ritual slaughter of cattle or goats, with meat being distributed among the community according to social rank.
At other times, live cattle are bled by opening a vein on the neck or flank with the point of an arrow. The blood is collected in a gourd, and the wound closed with ashes. The blood is either drunk immediately while fresh or mixed with milk. Even at slaughter, blood is collected and mixed with milk to be drunk later. Sour milk is also considered a delicacy.
19:00hrs you will be hosted to a “Bush” Barbeque Dinner with Maasai Dancers!
Bush Barbeque Dinner
Nothing is quite so essentially ‘Safari’ as the traditional ‘bush dinner’, especially when it is enlivened by the presence by a group of scarlet-clad Maasai Dancers. The lantern-lit dinner begins with cocktails around the campfire. Dinner will then be cooked on a blazing BBQ, accompanied by a wide range of salads and vegetables. While dessert and coffee is served, the Maasai will entertain you with songs, chants and dance displays.Dine in the wild and taste safari-life at its best
