East Africa
It is a place so remarkable it stands out even on a continent unparalleled for the richness of its wildlife, landscape and culture.

Geography
East Africa straddles the equator in the central portion of the African continent. The independent countries of Kenya and Tanzania cover most of the territory. A highland plateau, crowned by the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro, extends over much of the region. It is the habitat for many African wildlife species. The 653 square mile Masai Mara National Reserve is home to large populations of elephant, hippo, buffalo, giraffe, gazelle, zebra and impala. Predators are plentiful - especially cheetah, leopard and large prides of lion. Vast numbers of birds that breed in Europe and Asia fly to Africa to spend the fall, winter and spring. East Africa is an Ornithogist's paradise.

Ethnic Groups
Throughout East Africa there are numerous ethnic groups with unique cultural traditions. Among the better-known are the Bajun, Kikiyu, Samburu and Turkana. Perhaps the most famous is the Masai tribe. Until as recently as 100 years ago the Masai ruled over much of East Africa. Now concentrated in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania, they cling tenaciously to their culture and customs. To describe the Masai's attitude toward their cattle as mystical is not an exaggeration - they believe any pursuit other than cattle herding is demeaning to themselves and insulting to their god. The Masai's many rites of passage give their lives a profound meaning. The rhythms of nature and native traditions sound loudly in Kenya. Serena invites you to come and experience this for yourself.
