About Maputo - The magic
of Maputo
Maputo is a magical fusion of old colonial
style, third world street life and new development,
a city which hums with life and offers plenty
to do and see.
Climate
Situated close to the southern tip of Moçambique,
within easy reach of two of South Africa’s
borders, Maputo enjoys a tropical climate,
with temperatures ranging from a pleasant
65 ºF (18 ºC) in mid winter to about
78 ºF (25 ºC) in summertime. It
is the capital of Moçambique and home
to close on two million people.

History
In the late nineteenth century, Lourenço
Marques, as it was then known, was a vital
port for the rapidly growing gold fields in
South Africa, initially linked by an arduous
trail for ox and wagon, until the rail link
was built between the interior and the coast.
Under Portuguese rule, Lourenço Marques
became one of most attractive and popular
cities on the continent, with a cosmopolitan
culture resulting from the union of African
and Portuguese culture, with infusions from
the many visitors from around the world. They
came to enjoy the beaches, the seafood and
the glories of luxurious hotels like the Polana
Hotel, which was then as it is now very much
the ‘in’ place to stay.
With the 1970s came war, and
when the fighting finally came to an end, the
city was in terrible disrepair. But with indefatigable
optimism and vigour, the people of Moçambique
set about rebuilding, and today Maputo’s
renewal and energy is very evident in the many
nightclubs and restaurants around the city,
where citizens and tourists eat, dance and sing
the night away. The economy is reviving as industry
booms, and tourists have returned in significant
numbers.
