The purpose of launching PCI and training workshop was to get started with the basic requirements of Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Pakistan. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that approximately 17 percent of global greenhouse emissions are the result of deforestation and resulting land use change. Some 13 million hectares of forest, an area of England are destroyed annually. This deforestation and forest degradation are driven by the market failure that results in the economic undervaluation of standing forests. Therefore, efforts towards reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+) have become crucial.

The training workshop was designed as a mitigation response to climate change and designed to reduce carbon emissions. The main purpose was to train foresters, policy makers, NGOs, interest groups and community members on "Forest Carbon Stock Assessment for REDD" contributing towards the achievement of REDD Readiness Phase in Pakistan. Also that Pakistan will be able to earn revenue by reducing the logging and burning of its forests.
