The Serena is a brilliant hotel in Kabul. Security has been upgraded following the attacks on the hotel and it could now be comfortably considered one of the safest hotels in Kabul. The staff are extremely nice, service is brilliant as is the cleanliness and general amenities provided by the hotel. It is a five-star oasis in the middle of Kabul. It is definitely worth staying at! The hotel also offers two excellent restaurants. One of them has a different menu each evening so there is always something different to eat.
I had a business trip and decided to stay at the Serena in spite of concerns about security. Security is tight at the hotel and police vehicles on either side and one way in and out ensure that vehicles and people are checked before entering the hotel complex.
The hotel is beautiful, both the garden, the common areas and the rooms. I was greeted by a juice while my details were taken. Staff were pleasant and some staff were exceptionally good.
Tips are not encouraged at the Serena hotel and this is a breath of fresh air compared to some hotels where tips are almost required to get any service no matter how bad.
The hotel is incredibly comfortable and security is obvious and reassuring. There are a couple of restaurants to choose from and food quality is above average for Kabul.
I will definitely be staying here again in spite of the price tag as the next cheapest hotel is about $100 less but a world apart in terms of security and comfort.
A Slice of Heaven
I have stayed for multiple weeks at the Serena on two occasions now--once this August 2009 and then in March 2008. The staff are generally top flight, but language issues can come up if you've complex requests. If this happens, they will find you someone who can understand what you need. With security issues that the country faces, the Serena is as safe of a haven as it gets. Even during the most tense of moments this August around the days of the election, the hotel maintained a relaxed and calm atmosphere and the gardens and pool provided a respite from the tension outside of the hotel. I particularly love the food at Serena's main restaurant, where you have sumptuous buffets at each meal or you can order off of the menu. The evening BBQ's in the courtyard during the warmer weather are amazing and the chef's choice of grilled meats is unparalleled. I LIVED off of the lamb chops.
Worth Every Afghani
Magnificent Hotel and felt very safe. Lovely pool and environs. I would definitely stay here again.
