Safari Itinerary

A four-day flying safari that showcases the many faces of the magnificent Serengeti as well as the magical theatre of its wildlife.

The mighty Serengeti is Tanzania’s first-established, largest and most famous park and plays host to tens of thousands of hoofed animals, all of which roam in constant search for the fresh grass upon which their survival depends. The million-plus wildebeest are the predominant herbivore and also the main prey of a huge cast of large carnivores, principally lion and hyena.

Day One: Arusha to Western Serengeti

Begin your safari with a short but scenic flight from Arusha Airport to the Grumeti Airstrip of the Serengeti National Park where your dedicated safari guide/driver will be waiting to greet you. You can then enjoy your first game drive amid the wonder of this pristine wilderness as you journey to the magical Kirawira Serena Camp. Standing high on a hill with panoramic views over the rolling plains where elephants roam, Kirawira has been styled to replicate the lavish camps of the Edwardian era when aristocracy and royalty alike journeyed to East Africa to experience the thrill of the safari. Elegantly presented in antique style, this exclusive tented camp promises four-poster beds, elegant bathrooms, valet service, an atmospheric central lounge, an opulent dining tent and the very finest cuisine. There is also a swimming pool terrace with magnificent views and a fire-pit where evening sundowners are served.

Day Two: On Safari in Western Serengeti

Your safari days include two game drives daily, one in the early morning and the other after tea. Whether you take breakfast in camp before your morning drive or when you get back is up to you. Early morning tea will, of course be served in your tent.

About the Serengeti

The Serengeti is Tanzania’s second-largest park after the Selous. Supporting the greatest concentration of plains game in Africa, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an International Biosphere Reserve and the centre of an ecosystem that combines the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve and four smaller game reserves. Within this region live an estimated three million large animals, while the system protects the single largest movement of wildlife on earth, the annual wildebeest migration. Featuring some two million wildebeest, the world-famous migration is a cyclical process, which covers 800km, takes 7-8 months, and is best experienced in the Serengeti between November and June.  Given that the park hosts a shifting population of nearly two million wildebeest, 500,000 zebras and 30,000 gazelles, its population of predators is huge, with sightings of leopards, cheetahs and hyenas virtually guaranteed. Similarly, with some 3,000 lions in residence, the park offers the single largest concentration of lions on earth so the chance of seeing lions is high indeed.

Day Three: Onwards to the Central Serengeti

After breakfast set off on a memorable game drive into the central plains of the Serengeti. Along the way you will drive through short and long grass plains, acacia savannah and wooded grasslands thus giving you the chance to appreciate all the many characteristics of this extraordinary landscape. Now is the time to spot all the members of the wildlife cast including zebra, giraffe, Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelle, eland, impala, klipspringer, hippo and warthog. Arrive at the Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge in time for lunch and perhaps a dip in the pool. In late afternoon embark upon another memorable game drive arriving back at the lodge in time for sundowners before dinner.
