Peshawar was founded as the city of Puruṣapura, on the Gandhara Plains in the broad Valley of Peshawar in 100 CE. The city first existed as a small village in the 5th century BCE, within the cultural sphere of the ancient sub-continent. This ancient city, once ruled over by Alexander the Great, the Mauryan empire and the Islamic Ghaznavid empire, and the mighty Mughal empire.
