Article by Andrew Sessa Date: 29th July 2019 Conde Nast Traveler

Disney’s new Lion King remake has, unsurprisingly, been a box office hit—it’s been the top movie in the U.S. the last two weekends running, with more than $360 million in ticket sales since it opened on July 18. Disney’s new Lion King remake has, unsurprisingly, been a box office hit—it’s been the top movie in the U.S. the last two weekends running, with more than $360 million in ticket sales since it opened on July 18. Director Jon Favreau’s retelling of the 1994 animated classic uses cutting-edge CGI to bring the characters to life, not least among them Mufasa (once again voiced by James Earl Jones), Simba (Donald Glover), and Nala (none other than the Queen Bey herself).

The job of recreating the film’s African wilderness fell largely to production designer James Chinlund, whose past credits include Planet of the Apes and Avengers movies. Favreau had gone on safari a few months before meeting with Disney execs about the film, and after getting the go-ahead on the project, he sent thirteen key members of his production team, Chinlund included, on a two-week safari to Kenya. They brought along more than 2,200 pounds of camera equipment—that’s a literal ton, in case you were wondering—and shot more than 12 terabytes of images. We caught up with Chinlund to hear about the African locales that inspired specific Lion King scenes. Read more .....

Everything you've ever wanted to know about the Kenyan capital.

Think Kenya, and you think safari, right? Or perhaps, less favourably, you're familiar with the capital's other name: 'Nairobbery'.

But dismiss both stereotypes and you'll be pleasantly surprised by East Africa's most cosmopolitan city. Nairobi is the youngest, the most modern, and the fastest growing place in Africa. It's Kenya's beating heart, a giant melting pot of locals, tourists and expats simply trying to find their way round this hectic but oh-so exciting concrete jungle.

It's a city that demands your attention, meaning if you're not ready you can easily be caught off gaurd. To help, ELLE have compiled everything you need to know before heading off.

Where To Stay

From the simple to the sublime, accommodation in Nairobi has pretty much got you covered. If you want to wake up amid the hustle and bustle, aim for the city centre. Between Tom Mboya St and River Rd, you'll find lots of small hotels and guesthouses.

Incredible transformation of a former war zone

News Article by News.com.au

RWANDA’S capital, Kigali, is buzzing. The hum of construction threatens to drown out the chirping birds nesting in the trees that line the wide boulevards. Moto-taxis carry passengers and cargo — sometimes groceries, often pieces of furniture, or bales of hay — around the city.

These days, they’re not just transport of choice for locals, but for tourists, thanks in part to a new Uber-style app that requires drivers to conform to strict safety standards.

And, almost 25 years after 1994’s genocide, there are more tourists arriving than ever. Read more .......
