Known as one of the largest urban gazetted forests in the world, the Karura Forest Reserve sits in the northern section of the city, just a 15 minute drive from the hotel.

Just a seven-minute drive from the hotel, enjoy the 30-hectare forest reserve that is the Nairobi Arboretum. A host to more than 300 species, the arboretum holds over 100 migrant and resident birds, as well as exotic and indigenous tree species and Sykes and Vervet monkeys.

Located nearly 3.1 miles from the city centre, the Giraffe Centre is home to the endangered Rothschild giraffe, which is found only in the grasslands of East Africa. Built to protect the animals, visitors can partake in the main attraction of the centre and feed the giraffes from a raised observation platform.

Marvel at the largest mammals on earth at the only Elephant Orphanage within the City of Nairobi. Founded in 1977, the centre is an orphanage for rehabilitation and rearing of orphaned baby elephants. Here, you can learn about the lives of the animals and how they survive in the wild.

The Animal Orphanage and Safari Walk is the perfect activity for children to get up close and personal to view the local animals. The collection of Kenya’s diverse creatures includes the rare bongo, buffalo, various cats, antelopes and primates.

Author of Out of Africa, Karen Blixen lived between 1914 and 1931 on the beautiful farmhouse that is now known as the famed museum. The unique house showcases a different time within the history of Kenya, and offers a peak into the life of Karen and her husband, Baron Bror von Blixen Flincke.

Located in the central business district in the city of Nairobi, the archives was established in 1965 to display and maintain historic Kenyan crafts, paintings and photographs.

Known as the “Fruit Basket of Pakistan,” Ziarat Valley is home to some of the oldest Juniper forests in the world. Its pleasant summers make it a popular picnic spot.

Typically, the Serengeti bush dinner takes place at a scenic location on the plains. Or it can occur at our own dedicated bush dinner site, which stands high on a hill overlooking the migration corridor. An essential part of traditional safari life, the concept of having drinks whilst watching the sun go down dates back to the time of the great safaris of the 1920's, all of which featured the serving of elegant ‘bush' cocktails against the unforgettable backdrop of the African sunset.

Because entrance to the Crater is strictly limited – and also because there is so much to see – many guests prefer to take lunch on the Crater floor. This can be provided as a picnic, which can be enjoyed in one of the forest clearings, or as a full cooked lunch, which is typically cooked and served in the acacia groves. Before and after lunch, the guests are then free to enjoy extensive game drives around the Crater floor.

One of the highlights of the Crater visit, the bush breakfast is an experience not to be missed. Typically, guests are awakened by a very early morning cup of tea; they then set off down the steeply winding road that leads to the Crater floor. After a game drive through primeval forests and acacia groves, the guests arrive by the selected spot where a spectacular cooked breakfast is served. After breakfast, the game drive continues around the 120 km of roads that circle the lakes, forests and plains of this unique conservation area.

Take a day trip to Olduvai Gorge. Also known as the “Cradle of Mankind,” it is one of the most important and controversial Palaeolithic finds in recent history. 

After a long day game drive, 5:30 p.m. arrives and it’s time to head to the popular sundowner spot located on a high Kirawira hill. Enjoy a cocktail with hot canapés as you watch the sun slide towards Lake Victoria, leaving a magical, brilliantly red sky in its wake.

 A balloon safari is an excursion unlike any other. Drift in silence above the Serengeti plains, dip down to visit the hippo pools of the Grumeti River and enjoy a bird’s eye view of the wildlife theatre as it is enacted below you. Get the feel of the whole local market experience by visiting the Tengeru Market.  Tengeru is a local farmers market walking distance from the Arusha Serena Hotel, Resort & Spa. Catch the buzz of the local food and vegetable market as traders and buyers haggle over prices. 

Take a two to three-hour canoe safari on Lake Momella inside Arusha National Park. You can expect to see giraffes, buffalo, warthogs and zebras and enjoy uninterrupted views of Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru. 

The dolphin tour will take you to Kazimkazi, a quaint fishing village on the southern coast of Zanzibar. Here visitors can watch bottlenose dolphins and even experience swimming with them.

The only national park on Zanzibar, this forest is known for the endangered Zanzibar red colobus. Enjoy a walk on the nature trail through the forest which is also home to many other animal species including duiker and the Zanzibar servaline genet.

Stone Town is the heart of the historical Zanzibar with its old buildings and narrow streets dating back to the Slave Trade era hence a heritage protected site. The tour includes visit to the Darajani town market, the former slave market, slave caves and cells, Forodhani gardens, the house of wonders, Sultan palace and the Old Portuguese Fort.

Know and understand the history and culture of Tanzania at The National Museum. Here you will see artifacts depicting Tanzanian traditions that date back to the slave trade era and into the post-colonial period. 

The resort’s boating marina on Lake Victoria is located on a man-made bay featuring a channel and yacht basin with moorings for yachts and motorboats. Take a trip to the channel to Lutembe beach and view the exotic birdlife or cruise to Ngamba Island, a chimpanzee preserve where guests can participate in feeding the animals. Additionally, we offer dawn lunch and sundowner cruises for small groups. 

Located 23 km offshore from Entebbe, this 100 acres forested island is a safe haven for juvenile/ orphaned chimpanzees that are free to enjoy the natural habitat on this wonderful island.  The tour takes 3 hours charged at USD 450 to Ngamba Island exclusive of entrance fees at the Island. 

On the banks of Lake Victoria lies our beautiful, picture perfect golf resort with a 18-hole golf course, designed by Golf Plan with a challenging layout for golfers of all skill levels. The views of the lake and its surroundings are soft on the eye with ample bird life, while each hole has a different and relaxed feel to it.

Only 8 kms away lie the Kasubi Tombs, the tombs of the Kabakas, or Ugandan kings. This famed UNESCO Heritage Site provides a glimpse into the history of the Buganda Kingdom.

Only 1.5 kilometres from the Kampala Serena Hotel is a superb 18-hole golf course. The Hotel also offers guests golf clubs for rent.

Garm Chashma Hot Spring is 42km from Khorog, on the way to Ishkashim. The spring is least several thousand years old and by now exists as a huge travertine mound cascading down to the river. The curved cascades are bright white, yellow and brown and range from 1,5 km long, 35-45 meters wide and from 7 to 35 meters high. The water comes out of the earth in the form of micro geysers from 10 cm to 1,5 meters high. 

Karakul Lake was formerly known as the Lake Victoria, named after Queen Victoria by the British cartographers/ military geographer. It was marked as such by most maps of the area until the 1920s when the new Soviet cartographer replaced the British name with the Kyrgyz name Karakul, or Black lake. The lake lies at an elevation of 3,960 m above sea level. It is endorheic (lacking a drainage outlet) and the water is brackish. There is a small village with the same name on the eastern shore of the lake.

The Nyiragongo Volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, famous for the lava lakes that have formed in the summit crater. The hike to the summit takes approximately four to six hours and can be difficult in humid conditions, but you are rewarded by sightings of rare birds and animals such as monkeys, bushbucks and chimpanzees, and the summit offers wonderful views of Gisenyi Town.

A 45-minute drive from the hotel, Volcanoes National Park offers volcano trekking and the famous gorilla-trekking tour. 

Referred to as “magic waters,” the Amashuza Hot Springs are a 15-minute drive from the hotel. The minerals in these waters are known to contain medicinal values and a soak is thought to heal muscle disorders and numerous other ailments

This collective of Rwandan creative artists showcases local works in contemporary African arts, crafts, music and dance. In addition to exhibiting paintings, sculptures and mixed media expressions, the center conducts programs, projects and initiatives designed to expand the creative arts in Rwanda.

This valley runs north to south, joining the valley at Gupis. 

At 7,788 metres (25,550 feet), Rakaposhi is the 27th highest mountain in the world.  

A rock carving beside the Kargah Nala just west of Gilgit along the road to Punial, is the most popular short outing from the hotel.

Experience the daily drama that unfolds in the Kenyan Savannah!

Tsavo National Park consists of a diverse ecosystem where numerous species of wildlife are spotted on any game drive. From the tenacious elephant herds to buffalos and the big cats, a game drive in Tsavo is a must-have experience! Both night and daytime game drives are possible to give guests the opportunity to view both diurnal and nocturnal animals.

A black lava flow of eight kilometres, 1.6 kilometres wide and five meters deep, is the remains of volcanic eruptions. They were subject of tales among local communities who named the flow "shetani," meaning evil in Kiswahili, after it spewed from the earth when it was just 240 years old. Climbing the flow isn’t an easy task as the thick, black soil is composed of uneven chunks of solid magma.

Once climbed, the Roaring Rocks will give you magnificent panoramic views, usually only seen by the eagles and buzzards that fly around these cliffs. Over the plain called Rhino Valley and the Ngulia, the Roaring Rocks, located near the Rhino Sanctuary, has long been an observation point for the protection of black rhinoceros and the fight against poaching. 

“Mzima,” meaning alive in Kiswahili, is a peaceful oasis at the heart of red-dusty Tsavo and this magical place is not to be missed. The pure water of the three Mzima pools filtered by the porous sponge-like soil of the Chyulu and the Shetani lava flow brings life to a unique ecosystem at only 40 kilometres away from the Chyulu Hills. With a daily supply of more than 250 million litres of fresh water, the pool provides an oasis of green.

When the food couldn’t get any better, throw in a view to die for!

Adjacent to the Lodge is our dedicated bush barbeque area, which overlooks the Chyulu Hills and is traditionally lit with safari lanterns. Reached by a winding, lantern-lit pathway from the lodge, it features a stone-built buffet-area, bush bar and a glowing charcoal barbeque. Here, our chefs prepare a lavish 7-course banquet, which is served to individual tables gathered around a blazing fire-pit. At the end of dinner, our guitarist entertains you as drinks are served around the bonfire. A special cultural dancing troup may also be at hand to entertain you.

Be transported back 700 years and explore the royal seat of the ruler of Hunza – the Tibetan influenced UNESCO award-winning Baltit Fort. Enjoy lunch or coffee at the Baltit Fort Café whilst soaking up the incredible views over Karimabad.

Amboseli Serena has taken a leading role in environmental protection and preservation with a comprehensive action programme, the Re-forestation Programme. This conservation scheme encourages guests at the Lodge to participate and plant “their” own trees. 

Echo of the elephants is a documentary about a family of elephants in Amboseli National Park. It unravels the informative ecological and biological intrigues in the ever-elusive elephant’s world: but this time about this particular family led by Echo.

Take a most beautiful and scenic nature walk up into the valley along the Shigar stream. We recommend an excursion to the Deosai Plateau (literally "place of flowers" in Balti), a unique eco-system over 400 square kilometres at an elevation of 4,000 metres, which features over 100 species of mountain flora and is home to wildlife such as the Snow Leopard, Himalayan Brown Bear, Golden Marmot, Tibetan Wolf, Tibetan Red Fox, Himalayan Ibex, and Ladakh Urial.

Explore the nearby historic villages of Chinpa, Halpapa, and Shigar. Visit some of the most ancient mosques in the area, including the nearby Khilingrong Mosque and the 14th century Amburiq Mosque in Shigar Village, a UNESCO award-winning site. Hike up the famous Shigar Rock, at the top of which sits the ruins of Kari Dong, the first ancient Fort dating back to the 11th century. 

Soak your cares away in Chutron Shigar Hot Springs. Go boating on Kachura Lake and fish for trout before enjoying a picnic lunch at Sukh Nallah. Enjoy a swim in our local Lake Jurbusso. Located in the middle of a ‘cold desert’, one of the highest in the world, this warm water lake is stunning with its scenic beauty. Further afield, enjoy fishing and boating at Satpara Lake.

Float above the Mara plains in a dimension of unsurpassed tranquillity and beauty. The hot air balloon lifts you into the clear blue sky at dawn and gives you an eagle’s view of the wildlife pageant below. You will glide over the treetops with the early birds and be wafted gently over the plains, above the bustle and bumps of the ground below, but cruising close to enjoy the spectacular scenery.

After watching the awakening of an African day on your early morning game drive, you stop at a secluded and shady spot on the banks of the Mara River. It’s where hippos bask in the warming sun, birds flit among the shady branches and plains game stroll across the grasslands.

Please join us for a classic safari sundowner 'bubbly cocktail', on Lookout Hill with panoramic views across the Mara plains. The event includes a sundowner with hot and cold canapés and a full bar. It’s a traditional Maasai welcome that includes being greeted by the elders as well as traditional dressing and entertainment by a local guitarist and traditional Maasai dancers (by request and subject to a fee).

The Maasai are undoubtedly one of the most famous traditional cultures on earth. In fact, the Manyatta are usually a circular encampment of long, low, rounded houses, created by daubing cattle dung over a framework of sticks. Visiting a Manyatta is a good way to learn more about the Maasai culture and everyday life. Many ceremonies involve the ritual slaughter of cattle or goats with meat being distributed among the community, according to social rank.

This is the highlight experience! Soysambu Conservancy is entwined with a marching history reflecting back to 1890s. It is a home of the endangered Rothschild Giraffes and Black and White Colobus Monkeys.

How good is your aim? Archery is firstly, a Discipline and a Martial Art and secondly, a Sport. It is 85% mental ability and 15% physical prowess and therefore is regarded as one of the higher Martial Arts-Kyudo, the ‘way of the bow’. 

This is an experience out of this world. Table set at the Lake’s shore, the bubbly breakfast with an array selection of our fittingly assorted menu items is the best way to start the day. The Juniper forests of Ziarat Valley are famous for being the second largest in the world. They are home to important species such as the Suleiman Markhor, urial, black bear, and wolf, as well as more common wildlife like the Afghan pica, fox, jackal and the Chakor Partridge. 

A unique opportunity to track and learn about the lions of Ol Pejeta and contribute towards their conservation. Guests can participate in helping us to gather vital research information needed to monitor the collared lions. In the event that the collared lions are inaccessible, other lion sightings are reported and the same identifying features such as whisker spots, ear tears and nose spotting recorded.

Thanks to Ol Pejeta Conservancy’s private status it is able to offer night game drives, an activity not available in most national parks and reserves in Kenya. A night game drive offers visitors an opportunity to discover Ol Pejeta Conservancy ‘after hours’. Enjoy a walk along the water channel to Kargh Buddha. The three-hour trek from our hotel follows along the water channel of Jutial, to Barmas and Baseen.

Nearly 700 years old, the Victory Monument of Taj Mughal stands as a reminder of Taj-ud-Din Mughal, an Ismaili ruler from Badakhshan who came to Gilgit Baltistan during the 13th century, AD.  

Located behind the hotel, the Jutial Nala, like most valleys in the Gilgit Baltistan Jutial Nala, has a very narrow mouth, but a six-kilometre walk along the stream through the steep side gorge takes you to coniferous forest and pastureland.

Chinar Bagh (Freedom Fighters Monument) is a memorial of the heroes who died in the independence of Gilgit. The nearby Gilgit River allows for a pleasant walk, with two hanging bridges at stretch across the river. 

In a private garden in the village, visitors can find the Danyore rock. Inscribed in the rock are the names of the Tibetan kings who ruled in Gilgit during the seventh and eighth centuries.

The Karakoram Highway (KKH) is the greatest wonder of modern Pakistan. It connects Pakistan to China, twisting through the Himalayas, Karakoram, and Hindu Kush mountain ranges.

With a total of four lakes in the area, each unique in its beauty and diverse nature. The first lake is a startlingly green pond about 200 metres in diameter, surrounded by birch, ash and pine trees. The water is still and clear, its colour rising from bright green algae on the bottom. 

A two-hour drive from Gilgit to Bagrot Valley, guests can get from Gilgit to Sinakkar, the main village in the Bagrot valley.  

An hour south of Gilgit, the Haramosh Valley circles north and west around 7,209 metres. The peak of Haramosh descends to the road just where the Indus turns south.  

Considered by some to be the mightiest mountains of the world, these peaks are marvellous and majestic. 

The first valley in the old Kingdom of Hunza, Mayoon and Hussainabad descends from the north to join the Hunza River at Khizarabad about ten kilometres upriver of Chalt, opposite Nilt and the KKH.  

About 60 kilometres north of Gilgit, Chalt stands as the southernmost settlement of the old Nagar Kingdom. In 1891, the British arrived with a force of 1,000 men, and strengthened Chalt Fort by using it as their base to overthrow Hunza and Nagar in a fierce battle at Nilt. 

South of Gilgit, the Skardu road branches east to Baltistan and follows the upper Indus River, the dividing line between the Himalaya and Karakoram ranges. On the journey to Chilas, magnificent views of the Nanga Perbat Massif, the western end of the Himalayan Range can be seen. Chilas is the main town of Diamar valley, just three and half hours from Gilgit. 

Fairy Meadows are idyllic alpine pastures surrounded by pine forest on the Northern slopes of Nanga Parbat. 

The Astor Valley is a starting point to the Deosai Plateau, which gives way to sites like the Rama Lake, a beautiful sight where visitors can hike up the Siachen Glacier. The Astor road from Gilgit is 112 kilos away and accessible able by jeep. 

A serene place where explorers can swim, fish trout and camp, the Ghizer Valley gives way to a camp side in the meadow called Kashmir. Explore the area to find the Khalti Lake, famous for trout fish and Phundar, a small village nearby. 

Running north to south to join the Gilgit valley, the Ishkoman Valley divides the Karakoram Range from the Hindu Kush. Incorporated into Pakistan in 1972, it is about 100 kilometres to Chatorkhand and Phakora to the road head at Imit. 

Originating in Gilgit Baltistan, it is safe to say that it is the favourite sport in the area.

Known locally as “Kandt House,” this museum celebrates the work of Dr. Richard Kandt, a German physician and explorer who embarked on an exploration of Rwanda in 1897, searching for the source of the Nile River. A rich showcase of Rwanda’s natural treasures, the museum includes artifacts from Dr. Kandt’s expedition and also a ship that was sunk off the shores of Lake Kivu during the German troops’ surrender to the Belgian Army in World War I.

Established in 2007 by 18 women living in Nyamirambo, Kigali, the NWC examines Rwanda’s unfortunate history of violence, inequality and discrimination towards women. Today, the Center’s mission is to provide education and vocational training to disadvantaged women so that they can gain better opportunities for employment.

Located ten minutes from the city centre, the Kigali Genocide Memorial offers guided tours of the exhibits and gardens commemorating the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Visitors can choose to be guided by one of the staff, many of whom are survivors of the genocide, or purchase the KGM digital guide, which provides an audiovisual tour.

The watering hole is located adjacent to the main building, where you can wine and dine while taking in the great view of the green Chyulu Hills and watching a spectacular wide range of wildlife stop by to quench their thirst. 

Ololoolo escarpment forms the western boundary of the Mara triangle running along a geological fault line forming the edge of a granite plateau that rises to a height of 400 meters from the bottom.

 The escarpment receives more rain than the rest of the Mara triangle and lots of fresh water streams radiate from its face disappearing into the ground only to reappear in swamps lower down.  As a result of the rains a growth of thick vegetation is found to be growing along the escarpment    This terrain of the escarpment ranges from rocky crags, boulders strewn slopes and well-watered wetlands.  The icing on the cake has to be the ability to enjoy endless plains of grass of the Mara Plains which are a site to from atop the escarpment.

Later, by the lodge’s floodlit pool under the vast and starry dome of the African night, enjoy succulent lamb cooked on a spit, chicken and grills, pasta, salads and delicious desserts.

Located 30 minutes from the camp, the park is the home to Black and White Rhino; guests have the privilege of visiting the park as they drive through the conservancy.

Catfish and tiger fish are prolific in the river. Escorted by an armed ranger, you will enjoy a two-hour walk through the diverse landscapes of the Crater highlands, from the grassy plains to the mountainous forest. Along the way you will view various wildlife and interact with Maasai cattlemen.  

Visit authentic Maasai villages, all of which belong to the national Cultural Tourism Programme, and learn more about Maasai homesteads, traditional cattle markets and women's handicraft groups.

The Empakaai Crater is a beautiful 6-kilometre wide, 300-metre deep caldera containing a natural forest and a soda lake that serves as a famous Flamingo breeding site. From the north and eastern rim you can take in dramatic views of the Great East African Rift Valley, Lake Natron and the cone of the active Oldoinyo Lengai Volcano. 

Cultural talks are offered evenings at the bar area at 9:00 p.m. Our resident naturalist will discuss the Maasai culture, their activities, their lifestyle and their co-existence with wildlife within the Ngorongoro conservation area. You will also learn about the Ngorongoro ecosystem and biodiversity.

Enjoy a drink or a meal by the pool as you watch the animals going about their daily chores - grazing, hunting and avoiding predators.

The lake features over 240 species of bush, swamp and water birds. Enjoy a guided morning walk (07.00) or late afternoon walk (16.30) to see these indigenous birds in their natural habitat. The duration of the walk is about 2 to 3 hours, and the maximum number of participants is eight people. T

Enjoy a motorboat cruise on Lake Victoria, where you will see fishermen pulling in their nets and men and women working on their fields or washing their laundry. On the cruise you can bird watch, take photos and visit with villagers.

From the lodge, guests travel by road up to where the fishermen, in their traditional canoes are and taken along the shoreline to a nearby village. Here, guests can explore the village while learning about the traditions and cultures of the Sukuma people living at shoreline of Lake Victoria. This activity normally starts in the morning and the cost is USD $200 per canoe. The maximum number is eight people, and the price will be reduced if the number of people is two or one per canoe. The canoe trip also includes bird watching, both from the canoe and when exploring the village.

Slow in pace and wide-ranging in scenery, the Serengeti nature walk is designed to offer gentle exercise and a fascinating insight into the world of African trees, flowers, insects, reptiles, birds and animals. Tanzania offers more than 1,000 species of birds, half of which can be seen in the Serengeti. Most commonly spotted are the Masai ostrich and Kori bustard and, on the lakes, the lesser flamingo. 

This is an interactive learning class for guests interested in the Swahili language, and is conducted by an experienced teacher who makes it entertaining. Get to learn basic greeting words, counting, food and animal names.

Sundowners have been a hallmark of the safari experience since the 1920s, coupling the pleasure of an afternoon cocktail with the enjoyment of a majestic African sunset. The first ever Museum dedicated to the world legend Freddie Mercury, located in Shangani, in the heart of Zanzibar Stone Town, officially inaugurated on Sunday the 24th of November 2019, in order to commemorate the 28th anniversary of the beloved passing of the rock legend.

The tour provides a rare experience why Zanzibar is referred to as the 'Spice Island' with a tour of the rural Zanzibar to small hold farms and plantations where the locals are growing spices such as Vanilla, Nutmeg, Clove, Cardamon, Cinnamon etc., medicinal and ornamental plants and variety of tropical and local fruits. Hidden in the mountains 19 kilometres up a dramatic barren gorge is the green and lush valley, the Naltar Valley is heavily wooded with pine, spruces, birch, rowan and juniper. As one of the most highly recommended activities for a day outing from Gilgit, this is perfect for anyone looking to get in exercise. As a Pakistan Air Force Ski training base, a ski tournament organized by Pakistan Ski Federation at Naltar is held in February. It is also the starting point for two longer treks; one across the Naltar Pass (about 4,600 metres) to Ishkoman and the other across the Daintar Pass (4,636 metres) to Chalt. Naltar is a two-hour drive and about 47 kilometres from Gilgit via the west back of the Hunza River to Nomal Village.

Perched on two boulders cresting a thousand feet over the gushing Hunza river, the stunning 11th century Altit Fort is the oldest surviving monument of the region and the birthplace of the Hunza Kingdom. Altit, translating to ‘this side down’, was the first royal dwelling for the Tham (the traditional ruler) or Mirs of Hunza. The fort and the surrounding village settlement of Altit Khun have been restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture through its Historical Cities Programme. The fort is the recipient of the UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation in 2011.

Altit Fort has been home to a flourishing women social enterprise named CIQAM since 2003 ever since restoration work began on the Altit Fort. The word Ciqam [she-kum] means ‘greenery’ in Brushaski and stands for growth and prosperity. The enterprise was created in 2003 as a project developed under Aga Khan Cultural Services Pakistan (AKCSP), and co-funded by the Royal Norwegien Embassy in Pakistan (RNE).

The Leif Larsen Music Center is situated within the Royal Garden of the Altit Fort compound. The Center provides facilities for traditional musicians and performers of Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral to train youth in different traditions and genres of mountain music. It was set up under the Aga Khan Music Initiative in partnership with Royal Norwegian Embassy. Following the Ustaad-Shagird (teacher-apprentice) model of music education, the Center offers students short courses for training in local music instruments, music education and production as well as short residencies for visiting artists, writers, historians and environmentalists. The Center also helps local communities organize different festivals and music events.
